Story District returns to the historic Lincoln Theatre on October 1 with a curated lineup of standout local storytellers for one night, each sharing a true-life story.

The lineup changes every year, but the standard doesn’t. Top Shelf stories are smart, well-crafted, original, and deeply personal, delivered by storytellers who hold a room and take an audience somewhere they didn’t expect.

Stories range from hilarious to heartbreaking, strange to deeply familiar — love, family, faith, terrible dates, bad decisions, unexpected turns, and the occasional situation that probably seemed like a good idea at the time. Every story is true and told by the person who lived it.

The idea for Top Shelf began in 2010, during a Story District board meeting in a tiny apartment covered in sticky notes. The question was simple: What if we took one night to bring back some of our favorite stories and celebrate them together?

For 30 years, Story District has been showcasing entertaining and thought-provoking true stories by DMV locals that illuminate the comedy and complexity of being human. Through intensive coaching, classes, and live performance, we equip creatives and professionals to shape lived experience into compelling stories that connect with audiences.

Join us for our 16th edition on October 1 at the Lincoln Theatre. This event will be ASL-interpreted and wheelchair-accessible.
